The original origin of the Major Arcana is largely unknown. Some speculate that the Tarot originated from Atlantis. There are records of the Tarot existing in Egyptian times. Each card represents an Archetype. Archetypes stem from Carl Jung’s Archetypes. An archetype is basically a stereotypical idea, a novel idea, a trend in change. The Major Arcana is based on the same principals as Rune Stones, or the bones a shaman would throw on the ground. They invoke archetypal concepts.

The tarot has 22 cards as does the number of paths in the Qabbalah/Kabbalah Tree of Life:
